It was a wild ride west of Cleveland Friday, where a man led police from multiple agencies on a long, high-speed chase in a stolen cruiser.
It all started when two officers from the Lorain Police Department were sent to do a welfare check on a man with behavioral issues.
When they arrived at a home he shared with relatives on Livingston Avenue, they noticed an outstanding warrant in Lorain County and arrested him.
They then went to hand him off to a Lorain County deputy at a meetup point, only to have him swing fists the moment they tried to change his handcuffs.
The two officers were sent to the hospital, while the suspect stole their car.
“It’s a pretty good fight if you’ve got 3 on 1 and he’s still able to get away,” said Lt Michael Failing, Lorain Police.
Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Brandon Pettry and say he was wanted on two outstanding warrants. The first was in Lorain County and tied to breaking and entering. The second was in Cuyahoga County and tied to concealed weapons.
Lt. Failing said a 30-minute chase ensued for at least 25 miles down country roads at speeds of 100 miles an hour, while weapons were in that cruiser.
“There’s guns in there, there’s usually vests, everything a police officer would carry,” he said. “The fact he didn’t hit someone is amazing.”
Pettry now faces several additional charges.
“Multiple attacks on officers, escape, stole a car, you know, and then decides all the high-speed driving,” Failing said.
Strips eventually stopped the cruiser along State Route 13 near State Route 2 in Huron. The two Lorain officers sent to the hospital have been released
