GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — An early morning standoff came to an end Wednesday in Garfield Heights with one man in custody.

Police say the situation started at 2:55 a.m. when Garfield Heights police responded to a Sunoco location in the 6000 block of Turney Road for a report of shots fired.

“Upon arrival, it was learned that a male had entered the gas station brandishing a firearm,” according to a press release from police. “The male began making threats to the three employees, stating he was going to kill them.”

Police say the man left the store and fired one round into the air before fleeing the scene.

He was tracked to a home in the 12900 block of Rockside Road. Authorities made contact with his family and had them safely exit the home.

SWAT was called to the scene and negotiations with the suspect continued. He later surrendered at 8:15 a.m. and was taken into custody without incident. The firearm was also recovered, police said.

The man was taken to the Garfield Heights City Jail. Criminal charges are forthcoming, police said.

His name has not yet been released.
