DUNDEE, Mich. — A 46-year-old Leipsic woman is dead and a 31-year-old Napoleon man is in the hospital after police say the man led them on a chase through Lucas and Monroe Counties on Friday evening.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s office the pursuit started sometime before 9:30 p.m. when the man refused to stop for police in Toledo.
The sheriff’s office says the man reportedly had felony warrants for his arrest.
When the driver crossed into Michigan on I-75, Toledo Police terminated their pursuit, but Washington Township police continued to update Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies of the car’s location.
After the car got off the expressway on Exit 2, it made its way to Telegraph Road, and eventually Custer Road.
Stop sticks forced two tires to blow out on the car but it continued at a high rate of speed on Custer Rd. and into the Village of Dundee.
The sheriff’s office says when the man attempted to turn at the intersection of W. Monroe St. and Tecumseh St. he lost control of the car and struck a utility pole where the car came to rest.
At that point the vehicle caught on fire.
Sheriff’s deputies then extracted the man and his passenger, Lesley Rosales, from the burning car. Neither of them were wearing seatbelts and the airbags didn’t deploy.
Both Rosales and the driver, who’s name is being withheld, were taken to the hospital where the driver was listed in critical condition and Rosales was pronounced dead.
The crash occurred at 9:53 p.m.
