WASHINGTON — A Canton man was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to enter the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. armed with a hammer.
According to a release from the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP), the incident took place on Friday at around 3:40 p.m.
During an X-ray scan at the Capitol Visitor Center, an officer noticed a hammer in the backpack allegedly being carried by 33-year-old Christopher Snow. USCP officials say when the officer attempted to do a second screening, Snow tried to grab the bag and was being "combative."
During the struggle, Capitol police say officers were forced to use a Taser on Snow in order to stop him and place him into custody.
"These officers did what they were trained to do and stopped this man from getting into the U.S. Capitol,” said USCP Captain Andrew Pecher in a release. “Great work from the officer who spotted the hammer, to the officers who quickly took the suspect into custody.”
The USCP says investigators are working to determine why Snow came to the Capitol with a hammer. He is being charged with assault on a police officer.
