6 teens arrested after leading Garfield Heights police on chase in stolen Kia

The department says the kids are suspects in seven stolen car cases and three attempted car theft cases that happened over a short time period.

Six teenagers led Garfield Heights police on a six-minute chase through the city on Sunday afternoon, according to a Facebook post made by the department.

Authorities say the chase started after officers noticed the kids in a Kia they claim was reported stolen earlier that afternoon. The car became disabled during the chase, and the teens then tried to run away from police, per officials. The six kids involved were eventually caught and taken into custody.

The department says the kids are suspects in seven stolen car cases and three attempted car theft cases that happened over a short time period.

On 8/11/24 at about 3:50 P.M. Garfield Heights Officers located a Kia, stolen from our city earlier, on E. 131st occupied by six people. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, it fled from Officers and a pursuit was initiated. After a six-minute pursuit, the vehicle became disabled on E. 65th in Cleveland and all six occupants fled on foot. With assistance from Cleveland Police and OSP, all six juvenile subjects were located and taken into custody. All parties are suspects in 7 motor vehicle thefts and 3 attempted motor vehicle thefts in the area over the past few days. The below video shows a few of those arrests. All six suspects were denied acceptance into the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center by the juvenile prosecutor. They were subsequently released to their guardians. This was a great job by all our Officers and a big thank you to CPD and OSP for their assistance during this incident. Thank you to our community as well for your continuing support!

The kids were taken to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center, but were denied acceptance by the juvenile prosecutor. They have since been released to their guardians.

3News reached out to the CCJDC and asked why the kids were denied acceptance, considering the circumstances of the case. A spokesperson for the detention center responded to the request, asking for more information to look more into our questions. It is unclear if the kids involved have been charged at this time.

The Cleveland Division of Police and Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted with the chase, according to Garfield Heights officials.
