Police: Homeless woman gives birth to baby in wooded area and leaves to smoke cigarette at bar

Julie Alexander has been arrested on the charge of abandonment and endangerment of a child.

SAN ANTONIO — A 37-year-old woman was investigated by police after she and her baby were taken to the nearest hospital for care Tuesday afternoon.

Police say after she gave birth and left the baby, Julie Alexander went up the road to a bar and had a cigarette.

Police say they received a call from a male bystander carrying a newborn child asking for help just before 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers located the man and baby near Salado Creek Greenway. The man told officers he assumed the woman leaving the wooded area earlier was the mother of the child.

Police say when they arrived the woman was found at a bar up the road and showed signs of recently giving birth.

Dawn White-Fosdick is the president and CEO of CAM Ministries. She says Alexander was a client in 2023.

“I was able to look on our database and see that she had access to some services but it was limited,” White-Fosdick said. “She was not somebody we were regularly working with. But someone else may have been."

White-Fosdick says her staff was not aware of her current circumstances. But in 2023, she says Alexander received food and hygienic items.

“Any woman who is experiencing homelessness and struggling, is pregnant, and might be having a baby, there’s no questions asked, they can come and get help,” she said.

The gender of the baby has not been released.

The Department of Family Protection Services (DFPS) says it is too soon to determine if the child will be sent to a relative or go into the state’s custody.
