CLEVELAND — With Clifford Pinkney set to begin his retirement as Cuyahoga County Sheriff next week, county leaders are starting the process of finding his replacement.

A local screening committee comprised of law enforcement officials and experts in mental health and health in general has been formed to help aid in the search.

The committee features the following members:

  • Judge Ronald Adrine (former Administrative Judge, Cleveland Municipal Court)
  • Susan Neth (CEO, FrontLine Service)
  • Rocky River Police Chief Kelly Stillman
  • Middleburg Heights Police Chief Edward Tomba (former Deputy Chief, Cleveland Police)
  • Dr. Reginald A. Wilkinson (Director (Ret.), Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction)
  • Dr. Sherrie Williams (Board Member, Cuyahoga County Board of Health)

The county is utilizing a professional search firm to conduct a national search for candidates. The committee will interview 3-5 finalists and present feedback to Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish, who will then select the final candidate for confirmation by county council.

The revelation of the county's plan for the search for a sheriff comes amid controversy after a series of deaths have been reported at the jail and poor conditions for inmates. Pinkney testified before Cuyahgoa County Council earlier this week.

“We are continuously working to improve conditions at the jail in a multitude of ways,” said Budish in a statement. “By consulting and utilizing the expertise of these local leaders, we can ensure that the most talented person is being hired for such a critical role.”

The county announced on Wednesday that Lt. Bryan Smith has been appointed as Acting Sheriff effective on August 5. Pinkney announced his resignation in late May, citing 'personal reasons.'
