CLEVELAND — Four students at Riverside School in Cleveland were sent home on Monday after they told school officials that they may have consumed gummy candy laced with marijuana.
According to the four students, another student at the school gave them the candy. The parents of the affected students decided against having them transported to a hospital for medical examination.
Riverside School Principal Jessica Gamble released the following statement after the incident.
"To Parents & Caregivers of Riverside Scholars:
A disciplinary matter involving five students at our school today presents an opportunity for me to remind families of the importance of keeping medicine and other substances harmful to children secure at home.
Four of our students claimed they may have consumed marijuana-laced gummy candy given to them by another student this afternoon. Parents of the three children involved were immediately notified and the students were released to their parents after being examined by EMS.
The claims are under investigation and if found to be true, the student who distributed the candy faces discipline.
A post on social media that several students "overdosed" at our school is therefore false, and we are asking families to avoid sharing this or any information without verifying its accuracy.
This incident, while unfortunate, calls attention to the need for families and caregivers to keep medicines and harmful items secured and out of their children’s reach. Students whose conduct at school poses harm to themselves and others face serious consequences, including suspension and expulsion from school."
