Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School students sent home Friday amid threat: Read the letter that was sent to parents

Parents received a robocall saying students at the high school would be dismissed in a staggered release Friday morning.

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio — Students at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School were sent home Friday as school officials issued a robocall alerting parents of the situation.

Superintendent Joelle Magyar tells 3News the dismissal was decided out of caution after one student reported overhearing another student making a threat.

3News also learned students were placed in a “soft lockdown,” meaning they were being told to stay in their classrooms -- but were not barricaded inside.

This only impacted students at the high school and no other buildings within the district.

Here is a letter that was issued to parents:

Dear Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools Community,

Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School students are being dismissed effective immediately in a staggered release and supervised by the Broadview Heights Police Department, due to an alleged threat for violence and district officials' desire to keep everyone safe, and begin investigating.

As of 9 a.m. on Friday, April 14th, student drivers are being released first. our transportation department has mobilized busses to begin transporting students home in a grade-by-grade format. Once again, our local public safety teams are overseeing this dismissal in partnership with building and district leaders.

While the alleged threat for violence has not been substantiated, building leaders believe that safety is a priority and that the productivity of the school day has been compromised. The BBHCSD is acting out of an abundance of caution, in order to keep everyone safe.

Brecksville-Broadview Heights Middle School and Elementary School will remain open for the remainder of the school day, and students and staff there have been determined to be safe and secure by our public safety team, as the alleged threat was focused at the High School.
