Cardinal Local Schools closed Friday due to 'presence of bed bugs' in buildings, buses

Events Thursday evening were also canceled as the district cleans its transportation fleet. Things are expected to 'return to normal' after 3 p.m. Friday.

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — The Cardinal Local School District in Geauga County has announced all classes will be canceled Friday due to "the presence of bed bugs" inside their buildings and buses.

Events scheduled for Thursday evening were also postponed or scrapped altogether as officials work to clean the Cardinal bus fleet. Friday's cancellation also affects Cardinal students at Auburn Career Center.

"The health and safety of our students is our top priority," the district said in a statement on Facebook.

No further information on how the bed bugs got into the schools was shared publicly, although administrators had planned to send out a letter to parents "with more explanation." Cardinal says the cleaning should be completed by tomorrow with "normal operations" expected to resume at 3 p.m., meaning upcoming events such as Friday night's high school football home game against Kirtland are still a go.
