CLEVELAND — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland says it will be taking additional security actions at St. Jerome School in Collinwood after two students were respectively accused of bringing edibles and a taser inside the building in separate incidents.
According to the diocese, the violations occurred on back-to-back days, with the first student bringing the laced edibles to the school on Wednesday before sharing them with classmates. On Thursday, a second student was caught trying to bring a taser inside.
"St. Jerome takes these incidents are very seriously, and the two students involved will no longer be attending St. Jerome School," the diocese wrote in a statement, adding that police were called to investigate both incidents and that parents were also notified.
In an effort to prevent similar incidents from occurring, school administrators have implemented what they call "temporary" security measures, such as increasing police patrols through Friday and searching the bags of all seventh and eighth-graders through the end of next week before the holiday break begins.
"The safety of students and staff is a top priority for St. Jerome's leadership team, and they will take all necessary steps to ensure their security and wellbeing," the diocese said.
