Cleveland Metropolitan School District announces Thursday visit with US Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten

Marten is expected to tour two Cleveland schools where she will spend time in classrooms learning about CMSD's problem-based learning models.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is set to host U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten on Thursday as she comes to Northeast Ohio as part of her "Raise the Bar: Lead the World" tour.

Her visit will be used "to discuss how they can continue to promote academic excellence and prepare students for global competitiveness," officials announced.

She's expected to tour two Cleveland schools -- Memorial School and Lakeside Campus -- where she will spend time in classrooms learning about CMSD's problem-based learning models.

The "Raise the Bar: Lead the World" tour kicked off last month. It will continue in other states, which are set to be announced at a later date.

Here's an outline of Marten's schedule during her visit to Cleveland:

  • 8 a.m. Tour of Memorial School: 410 East 152nd Street
  • 10 a.m. Tour of the Lakeside Campus (Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School and Cleveland High School for Digital Arts): 1440 Lakeside Avenue
  • 11 a.m. A brief will be held at the conclusion of the school tours.
  • 12:30 p.m. Student roundtable
  • 1:15 p.m. Parent roundtable
  • 3:15 p.m. Teacher roundtable

CMSD CEO Eric Gordon will join Marten for both tours and all three roundtables. Holly Trifiro, the Chief of Education for the city of Cleveland, is also expected to attend both tours.

All three roundtable events will also feature CMSD CEO Eric Gordon.
