CLEVELAND — With the 2020 election just a few weeks away, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District is launching a levy campaign kickoff Thursday in an effort to gain support for Issue 68.
The levy, which is a 15-mill renewal and a 5-mill increase, will be used to cover the district’s operating budget for 10 years.
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, CMSD CEO Eric Gordon, students, faculty and other leaders will host a Zoom levy campaign kickoff at 5 p.m.
But first, the City Club of Cleveland is hosting a forum at noon to highlight Issue 68 and a levy for the Cuyahoga County Public Library. City Club officials say leaders from both organizations will “explain the respective levies and what their passage or failure would mean for staff, constituents and the community.”
Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

During his state of the schools address last month, Gordon explained why the district needs Issue 68 to pass.
“We have nowhere else to cut but kids and classrooms," he said. "We will have no choice but to layoff teachers and other educators from every layer of the organization. We will have to cut programming like we did way back 10 years ago we will have to face more school closures."
