Geneva teachers strike ends with new agreement reached

The strike had gone into effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

GENEVA, Ohio — Two days after teachers in Geneva went on strike, the school district announced early Friday morning that a tentative agreement with a three-year contract had been reached with the Geneva Area Teachers Association (GATA).

Although school is closed Friday, district officials noted on Facebook that administrators and classified staff were expected to report at regular time with certified staff on a two-hour delay.

The strike began at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday and teachers started walking the picket line a few hours later with signs that declared: “Geneva teachers on strike for quality education.”

GATA spokesperson Cheryl Ramsey had previously said the strike was not about money, but getting students the learning environment they deserve.

A Facebook page titled "We Support Geneva Area Teachers" also addressed the deal in a pair of posts early Friday.

"WE REACHED AN AGREEMENT TONIGHT!!" one post declared. "WE ARE SO THANKFUL TO ALL OF YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR STRUGGLE FOR QUALITY EDUCATION IN GENEVA!"

“This was an extremely difficult decision, but we need to take a stand for quality education for all of our students,” Ramsey said in a statement when the strike began. “During the pandemic, synchronous in school and online learning did not work for most of our students, yet our superintendent wants to continue with this option. Ironically, the program for online learning that she has refused to approve has been purchased for use during the strike.”
