John Carroll University to launch nursing program in fall 2023

Prospective students can now apply for the new program that begins in the fall of 2023.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — John Carroll University is set to launch a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program that will begin in the fall of 2023.

The school in University Heights, which announced plans for the new undergraduate degree on Friday, said the nursing program was approved by the Higher Learning Commission at a meeting in October.

Students interested in pursuing a degree in nursing are able to apply for the program HERE.

“John Carroll University nurses will receive well-rounded academic preparation and rigorous skills training in the Jesuit tradition with a focus on care for the whole person – mind, body, and spirit,” said  John Carroll University President Alan R. Miciak, Ph.D. “Every John Carroll nurse will benefit from access to local and regional partnerships, an alumni network that includes thousands of healthcare professionals, and an investment in campus facilities that will simulate the future of patient care.”

Officials say students in the program will train in brand-new facilities in the Dolan Center for Science and Technology on John Carroll's campus. A high-fidelity lab with two simulation beds for hands-on patient care and a low-fidelity nursing lab with 10 beds for patient training will open in January.

The program will offer unique opportunities for students as Northeast Ohio hospitals continue to deal with a nursing shortage, leaving nearly 4,500 open positions in healthcare. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the nursing field is expected to expand by 12% in 2028.

“Our mission-driven, values-based approach to nursing education will include Jesuit core curriculum courses in theology, philosophy, and the humanities, all required nursing courses, and full access to the student experience including athletics, clubs, Greek life, and service,” said Steve Herbert, Ph.D., provost and academic vice president. “John Carroll University nurses will benefit from our institutional commitment to learning, leadership, and service for the greater good as they prepare for the complexities of patient care, now and into the future.”

"John Carroll is also pursuing plans to expand its healthcare portfolio beyond these programs in the near future," according to a press release.
