Kent State shootings: May 4 site dedicated as National Historic Landmark

The site is one of 76 Historic National Landmarks in Ohio and one of 2,500 across the nation.

KENT, Ohio -- The portion of Kent State University's campus where four students were shot and killed by Ohio National Guard officers May 4, 1970 will be dedicated as a National Historic Landmark on the anniversary of the shootings.

The site was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior in 2016, but the university will dedicate the site during its commemoration this Friday. A special ceremony is open to the public Friday afternoon at the Honors College Plaza at 3:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend can register here.

The site is one of 76 Historic National Landmarks in Ohio and one of 2,500 across the nation. Friday's ceremony will feature the unveiling of a plaque to officially dedicate the site as a Historic National Landmark.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, former CBS anchor and journalist Dan Rather will speak at Kent State's MAC Center to discuss his career covering world events, including the college's May 4 incident. Tickets to hear Rather can be registered here.
