KENT, Ohio — As students head back to the campus of Kent State University this week, the university is making sure students and staff are as safe as possible.
The first precaution the university took to increase social distancing was to extend the move-in period from two days to a week. The university hopes this will decrease crowds.
Upon arrival, students will receive a welcome kit that includes two masks, hand sanitizer, and sanitation wipes. It also the "safe seven principals" the school is preaching to its students, such as reminders to wash hands frequently, wear a mask, stay home if sick, and look out for other students' well being.
Move-in began at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning and will end on Sunday. There will be a total of 3,800 students living at 23 residence halls.
To increase social distancing inside dorms, KSU has reduced capacity, including changing one to a single room-only dorm, removing triple rooms, and removing one hall completely from being used. As far as classes go, 40% will be face-to-face while 60% will be either remote or online learning.
Classes at Kent State begin Aug. 27.
