ELYRIA, Ohio — Elyria City Schools says a student has been arrested “in connection with threats that were directed at Westwood Middle School yesterday on social media.”
The district shared the news in a Facebook post Monday morning after they were notified of the student’s arrest by the Lorain County Sheriff's Department.
“Deputies still plan to maintain a presence at the school today,” the district said.
The update comes hours after the district first posted about the situation.
“We became aware tonight of a post that is circulating on social media about threats of violence at Westwood Middle School,” the district wrote. “The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Law enforcement will be present at Westwood on Monday. We will also send a phone message about this to parents on Monday morning before school. Elyria Police Department was also notified.”
Lorain City Schools, meanwhile also addressed being notified late Sunday night of "a threatening post on Instagram."
“The origin of the post was traced to one of our students,” the district said in an updated post overnight. “No weapons were found in the home. There is no threat to our schools at this time.”
The district said they were alerted to the threat by a concerned parent.
