University of Akron President Matthew Wilson to step down

Wilson will return to the Akron Law school.

AKRON -- University of Akron President Matthew Wilson announced his intentions to step down from his role to become a full-time faculty member on Thursday.

Wilson penned a letter to students and faculty published Thursday in which he cites "personal and family considerations" as his reasons for stepping down. He says he'll return to a faculty position within the Akron Law school.

"As I look back over my past four years at UA, it truly has been an honor to dedicate my heart, strength, soul, and mind to serving the institution in an effort to assist students, stabilize matters, overcome challenges, generate new opportunities, and lead UA to even greater heights," Wilson wrote.

The changes take effect July 31.

University of Akron Board of Trustees Chair Roland Bauer formally announced Wilson's decision in a news release issued Thursday morning.

Bauer said the board of trustees will soon meet to appoint an interim president.
