Students participating in the walkouts memorialized the 17 students shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida one month ago. Students walked out of their schools at 10 a.m. and remained outside for 17 minutes.

Students were also pushing for stricter gun laws. They're calling for Congress to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines, expand background checks on all gun sales, pass a law to remove guns from those with restraining orders against them, and stop the militarization of law enforcement.

More than 2,800 schools nationwide were expected to participate, according to organizer Empower.
