The new vision would re-route Shaker Boulevard around the Square, creating a more cohesive and pedestrian-friendly area.

CLEVELAND — As Shaker Square approaches its 90th birthday, designs for a new future of the iconic neighborhood have been unveiled.

“This is Shaker Square," a nine-month planning, design, and strategic implementation coalition, showed off its vision at a community picnic and gathering on Sunday.

The goal of the new look Shaker Square will be for it to better serve as a gateway between two municipalities and several neighborhoods. This is currently how the square looks:

The new vision would re-route Shaker Boulevard around the Square, creating a more cohesive and pedestrian-friendly area.

Plans also call for a promenade, a north-south walkway, a large lawn space with a stage that could host outdoor movies, a splash pad and playground, plus three parking garages.

The total cost of the plan has yet to be determined, but project leaders hope to move forward with some of the initiatives, including community murals and lighting in the next year or two.

"This is Shaker Square" is led by LAND Studio and Cleveland Neighborhood Progress. According to LAND, Shaker Square is the oldest shopping district in Ohio and the second oldest in the country.
