Lake Shore power plant set to be demolished.

CLEVELAND – FirstEnergy is set to demolish the Lake Shore power plant on Cleveland's east side according to officials with the company.

The power plant is located at E. 70th Street and South Marginal Road, which is adjacent to the East Shoreway.

It sits on the shores of Lake Erie just four miles east of downtown Cleveland.

The coal-burning power plant closed this past April as part of a company plan to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations on emissions of mercury and other air pollutants. It closed along with the other two coal-burning power plants in Northeast Ohio, which are located in Eastlake and Ashtabula.

A spokesman with FirstEnergy tells WKYC that the demolition will begin within the next 18 months.

The plant was built in 1911 and has been operated by the Akron-based corporation FirstEnergy since 1993.

The plant sits on approximately 57 acres of land.

The spokesman also noted that the company has not been approached yet for other uses of the land, but are open to the idea of it should the right opportunity present itself.
