Monday marks a special day for mathematicians around the world because it’s 3-14, otherwise known as International Pi Day.
Pi, not to be confused with the much more appetizing pie, is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The first three digits of the calculation are 3.14 which has made March 14 the official day of Pi.
According to piday.org, yes there are lots of websites dedicated to Pi, the exact number has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond the decimal point. Mathematicians say the number will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern.
And in honor of Pi Day, Pizza Hut is challenging fans of its pizza pies to solve one of three math problems posted on the company’s website. The winner will get 3.14 years of Pizza Hut pizza. The problems were put together by a professor at Princeton.
But while the day is mainly for the mathematical constant, it’s never a bad time to break out some recipes for some of the best pies out there. USAToday put together the top pie recipes from around the world based on an analysis by Pinterest.
So whether it’s a celebration of the math constant or simply a day to enjoy your favorite pie, remember, both are all part of the “circle” of life.
