The Cleveland Clinic was granted $2 million from the State of Ohio in order to expand its landmark Brain Study.

The two-year Third Frontier Research Incentive grant awarded to the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is funded by Ohio’s Department of Education.

The grant will help the Cleveland Clinic expand its landmark Brain Study, by adding yoga, music therapy, diet and other wellness interventions for patients in the study.

“This new state grant and collaboration with Case Western Reserve University is Ohio’s next step in the advancement of brain health research. Ohio has been a strong innovator in health care, and with this news, will continue to uphold its reputation as we place emphasis on areas of prevention and treatment,” said Governor Mike DeWine in a media release. “The potential impact of this study could be game-changing for the millions of Americans who struggle with neurological diseases."

The Cleveland Clinic will give these interventions to patients who have early signs of brain diseases, in order to measure the intervention's effectiveness.

The Brain Study is the largest study ever done on brain disease. The Cleveland Clinic is hoping to find out if they can prevent or delay neurological disorders.

Over the course of 20 years, the landmark study will collect data from up to 200,000 neurologically healthy individuals, with the hope of identifying ways to prevent and cure neurological disorders.

Andre Machado, M.D., Ph.D., and Imad Najm, M.D. of Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute, are leading the study. Over time, the study will expand from Cleveland Clinic’s main campus to additional sites.
