Cleveland Department of Public Health warns against vaping

The Cleveland Department of Public Health is the latest public agency to express concern over vaping.

CLEVELAND — Vaping remains a national hot topic as concern grows among health officials.

The Cleveland Department of Public Health is the latest public agency to express concern over vaping. The department issued a warning on Monday advising against the use of e-cigarette and vape products.

"The CDC has identified serious risks associated with e-cigarette products," the department said in an advisory issued by the city of Cleveland. "Vaping exposes users to many different substances for which there is little information about related harms – including flavorings, nicotine, cannabinoids, and solvents. The CDC has declared e-cigarettes as not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products."

According to the department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked 380 cases of lung disease to vaping across 36 states. Six of those reported cases have ended in death.

The state health department has logged 10 cases in which Ohioans have been hospitalized due to pulmonary distress following use of vaping products.

Anyone experiencing shortness of breath, coughing or fatigue after using vaping products should seek medical treatment immediately.
