5 residents die from coronavirus at Wooster nursing home; 15 more people infected

The cases account for all five coronavirus deaths in Wayne County so far.

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Wayne County Health Department has confirmed a cluster of coronavirus cases at a local nursing home.

Officials say 20 people (10 residents, 10 staff members) have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Glendora Health Care Center on Honeytown Road. Five people have died, all of them residents at the facility.

This is at least the third nursing home in Northeast Ohio to become a coronavirus "hot spot": 14 people at Anna Maria in Aurora have tested positive for the disease (with one death), and Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake reports 17 cases. Tuscarawas County also confirmed roughly 20 people at one of its "long-term care facilities" came into contact with someone who latest tested positive, but no further details have been given.

"This is an extremely unfortunate situation and certainly our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased's family and friends," Wayne County Health Commissioner Nicholas Cascarelli said of the developments at Glendora. "Nursing homes are hot spots for this potentially deadly disease."

Neither Glendora nor the health department will be releasing the names of any patients, although they are currently working to reach anyone who may have been in contact with them. The deaths at the nursing home account for all five coronavirus deaths in Wayne County so far.

Of the more than 1,700 COVID-19 hospitalizations in Ohio, 62% have been age 60 or older.
