Cleveland Better Business Bureau warns of online face mask scams

Make sure you only buy from reputable stores and websites.

CLEVELAND — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has strongly recommended that customers wear face masks as retail stores get set to reopen next month.

With consumers and businesses are looking for reliable sources to purchase face masks from, the Cleveland Better Business Bureau is issuing a warning not to fall victim to online face mask scams.

A Maple Heights resident thought she was ordering masks online from a reputable company earlier this month only to find out she was victim of a scam. She never received any masks that she ordered.

The Better Business Bureau offer these tips to consider when ordering face masks online:

  • Only buy from reputable stores and websites, buy directly from a known and trustworthy seller.
  • Check with the BBB's website BBB.org to check other consumers' ratings.
  • Consumers should make sure the online store has working contact info.
  • Be suspicious of stock photos of masks.
  • Research the online seller.
  • Pay for the masks by credit card, its easier to dispute the charge.
