Coping with cancer during COVID-19

The American Cancer Society has provided ways for maintaining your mental, emotional and physical health during these challenging times.

“You have cancer” can be the most isolating moment of someone’s life.

Especially now during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, as many of us are practicing self-quarantine and social distancing, taking care of your mental and emotional health as a cancer patient, survivor, caregiver or loved one is incredibly important.

The American Cancer Society has provided ways for maintaining your mental, emotional and physical health during these challenging times.

  • Spend time with family and friends virtually. While you are social-distancing, this may mean more texts and phone calls, experimenting with video calling, sending an email or e-card or joining online support groups.
  • Go outside when you can, get regular physical activity and eat a healthy diet.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Try out books, websites, apps and videos that can help you relax.
  • Find ways that help you laugh, like talking with other upbeat people, playing games and watching movies.
  • Do things you’ve wanted to do at home, like de-cluttering, trying new recipes, or reorganizing cupboards and closets.
  • Focus on your spiritual side by reading, participating in online discussions, or communing with nature, journaling, meditating or creating art.
