Kent State employee being tested for Coronavirus

The employee is now in isolation.

KENT, Ohio — An employee at Kent State University in Portage County is being tested for coronavirus. 

The employee, who has been in contact with someone who has tested positive for the disease, is in isolation for the next 14 days, according to Kent State's website. 

In the past two days the employee has performed maintenance work in three residence halls including Fletcher, Lake and Olson halls. The employee also worked in the following buildings. 

  • Center for the Visual Arts
  • Center for Undergraduate Excellence (CUE)
  • Heer Hall
  • Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MACC), 
  • MACC Annex
  • Schwartz Center
  • Taylor Hall
  • Williams Hall

The above listed areas are schedule to be deep cleaned Sunday under guidelines provided by the Ohio Department of Health.

Kent State is closing its residence hall and students are being required to check out of their residence hall by 5 p.m. on March 20.

The school also provided the following guidelines to as preventative measures. 

  • Avoid large gatherings and follow social distancing recommendations of 3-6 feet.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your arm or a tissue.
  • Avoid exposure to others who are sick.
  • Stay home while you are ill (except to visit a healthcare professional) and avoid close contact with others.
  • Get adequate sleep and eat well-balanced meals to ensure a healthy immune system.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
