LAKE COUNTY, Ohio — April is Alcohol Awareness Month and it appears that Ohioans are buying more alcohol while under the stay-at-home order.
According to the Ohio Division of Liquor Control, from March 1 through March 29 of 2020, there was an increase of alcohol sales by 23.7% when compared to the same time period in 2019. Breaking it down even more, people in Ohio bought 1.11 million more gallons of adult beverages then they did last year at this time.
While we are being asked to stay home, Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers released information from the World Health Organization (WHO) calling “alcohol consumption an unhelpful strategy to cope with boredom during coronavirus lockdown after retailers have been overwhelmed by surging wine, beer and spirits sales this past month.”
The Lake-Geauga recovery centers say it’s important to know safe drinking habits and provides these tips:
- Keep track of how much you drink
- Choose a day each week when you will not drink
- Don’t drink when you are upset
- Limit the amount of alcohol you keep at home
- Avoid places where people drink a lot
- Make a list of reasons not to drink
