AKRON, Ohio — Dozens of cars line up during each time slot at Summit County's mass testing site.
"Our son who had visited us over Christmas break has tested positive Monday, and even though we're vaccinated and boosted, we wanted to know our status," Steve Braswell said.
Steve Braswell and his family were just three of 900 people tested for COVID-19 in Summit County Wednesday.
The site is run by multiple organizations, including the National Guard. The site is also where officials saw a 54 percent positivity rate during the last week of December.
"What we're seeing are really, really high rates of circulating virus anyway, and then you layer on top of that people coming to the test site because they experience symptoms," Summit County Health Commissioner Donna Skoda said.
Skoda anticipates positivity rates at the site are higher than community spread since many who are coming have either been exposed to COVID or have symptoms, so she was anticipating high numbers.
"It's not surprising at all, Cuyahoga County saw very similar numbers when they started their testing events and we're hopeful they'll trail off over the weeks," Skoda said.
With high levels of community spread, Douglas Gray has been trying to get tested before leaving town, but finding one has been hard.
He found it at the Summit County mass testing site.
"I was grateful for that because I was running out of options," Gray said.
For both Gray and Braswell, this mass testing site is the one place they feel there are answers while everyone is looking for the same one.
"You know, every drug store, every pharmacy is just about sold out of at-home test kits," Gray said.
Both are feeling relieved.
"This site, we saw it pop up this morning on social media and we were able to get in today," Braswell said.
