CLEVELAND — University Hospitals received more than $5 million dollars in community donations to help battle the coronavirus pandemic here in Northeast Ohio, as of Tuesday morning. The majority of that money comes from community hospital foundations and a clinical research grant.
The hospital system said in a press release that the money will go toward providing "crucial, local-level support during this pandemic."
ichard Beal, president of the Samaritan Hospital Foundation stressed how important support is.
"During this unprecedented time, I think all of us at community hospital foundations feel the same," Beal said. "It is crucial that we show support for our local UH medical centers and the dedicated caregivers that work there."
Additionally, $1 million from the Cleveland Foundation will go toward a UH trial for a preventative coronavirus treatment called ARMS-I. The trial will attempt to determine whether the drug can prevent airborne transmission of the virus.
University Hospitals has also received major contributions from local families and businesses to help fight coronavirus, in addition to more than $500,000 worth of personal protective equipment donations.
"Today [our] promise is more important than ever," UH COO Eric Beck said, in a press release. "And we are grateful to have widespread support throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond as we face this pandemic together."
