COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine today held his latest press briefing regarding the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in Ohio and his administration's response to the crisis.
More than 20,000 state residents have been infected with COVID-19, and more than 1,000 of those people have died. However, the governor does say new hospitalizations are starting to decline.
DeWine was joined, as usual, by Lt. Gov. Jon Husted and Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton. The trio further discussed Ohio's gradual reopening under the new "Stay Safe Ohio" order, and on Monday office environments as well as factories, distribution centers, and construction sites were allowed to get up and running again as long as they take proper safety measures.
"This policy counts on the fact that Ohioans will continue to do the right thing," Husted said. "We're going to have to exercise personal responsibility."
DeWine also addressed those who are protesting against the government's response, something he says he doesn't like to do out of respect for their First Amendment rights. The governor expressed his displeasure at those who are harassing and being "obnoxious" with the media (particularly NBC4's Adrienne Robins), as well as those who have set up shop outside Dr. Acton's home.
"I'm the elected official. I'm the one who ran for office. I'm the one who makes the policy decisions," he said. "To bother the family of Dr. Acton? I don't think that's fair game."
