NORTON, Ohio — It has now been one year since Norton teen Emma Pfouts collapsed at her Homecoming dance due to a severe asthma attack.
With the community still rallying behind her, Emma’s mom, Christina Boyer Weigand, said the recovery process continues.
“She has definitely come a long way,” Weigand said. “She definitely has a long way to go, and she’s aware of it. With her positive attitude with it, I think the sky is the limit for her. She’s going to keep trying until she gets it.”
Emma is undergoing therapy each day with several goals in mind, which include walking, returning to school and being able to drive.
“Words cannot even express how proud we are watching Emma as she continues to progress throughout her journey,” Weigand posted on Facebook back on Oct. 8. “She is so determined to gain back everything she has lost, it’s incredibly inspiration.”
Emma had been placed in a medically induced coma following the asthma attack. Back in July, 3News learned Emma's casts had been removed from her legs and she was transitioning to walking boots.
"We have flat feet!!" Weigand wrote on Facebook back on July 9, adding that the casts came off earlier than expected. "She continues to work on her hands to try to get them more functional & her ortho[pedic] doctor recommended hand therapy for now, no surgery yet...She is so happy to start working on her cheer moves!! She is such an inspiration to us, her attitude is so great, she melts my heart!"
