Getting a manicure or pedicure may sound like a great way to relax, but experts are warning that picking the wrong one could put your health in danger. Bacteria and other germs found in salons could cause staph and other infections.
Here’s what experts say you should look for when walking into a salon.
- Do a cleanliness check. Any dust and grime at workstations is likely left over from another customer. Gross, we know! One place you may not think to look is in the bathroom. That can be a huge red flag that workers do not care about hygiene.
- Check out the supplies. Take a look at the supplies your manicurist is using; do they look clean? All non-metal tools like nail files and buffers are supposed to be brand new. Other tools should be disinfected in between each client. If you are concerned, most places will allow you to bring your own files and other supplies for the technician to use.
- Beware of pedicure tubs. They may seem relaxing, but experts say they are a hotbed for bacteria. See if the salon you’re going to uses pipe-free or jet-free tubs, which can cut down on bacteria.
Wherever you go, follow your instincts. Knowing when a place doesn’t seem right can help you stay safe while getting a new look.
