University Hospitals CEO Thomas Zenty announces retirement plans

CLEVELAND — University Hospitals Chief Executive Officer Thomas Zenty III laid out his plans for retirement in a news release issued Tuesday.

According to the release, Zenty plans to officially retire at the end of January 2021. He has served as UH's CEO for nearly 18 years.

UH has seen much expansion and growth under Zenty, including construction of the UH Seidman Cancer Center and the UH Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood, which will begin a $200 million expansion soon. UH also has several community hospitals across the region, including in Parma, Ravenna and Ashland. Under Zenty's leadership, UH has expanded from three to 18 hospitals to provide care for 1.3 million patients annually. UH also opened its Rainbow Center for Women & Children in Cleveland's Midtown neighborhood under Zenty's watch.

UH remains a nationally recognized hospital system, ranking in the top 1% of hospitals and the No. 2 hospital in the state on U.S. News & World Report's annual hospital rankings.

During his tenure, Zenty has also received the Warren Bennis Award for Excellence in Leadership from the Global Institute of Leadership Development, and was recognized by Modern Healthcare among the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.
