Though they have found mosquitoes infected with the virus, they are urging the public not to panic.

The Tuscarawas County Health Department says, it has found a mosquito pool that tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The pool, which was located on Florence Avenue in Dover Township, was tested earlier this week with a positive result.

“We don’t want anyone in our community to panic,” explained Caroline Terakedis, TCHD Environmental Health Director, “We issue this notice to let residents know that West Nile Virus infected mosquitoes are active in the area and to share steps you can take to help prevent exposure.”

The Health Department says it will be spraying for mosquitoes multiple times in a two-mile radius of where the positive pool is located in the coming days.

To protect yourself from being bitten by mosquitoes, the Ohio Department of Health says to do the following:

  • Use insect repellant while outdoors
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants when weather permits
  • Spray your clothing with repellant as well - mosquitoes can bite through it
  • Consider avoiding going outdoors in the early morning or evening hours
  • Empty any standing water you have near your home
  • Check screens for holes and repair them, or use air conditioning
