University Hospitals releases guidelines for healthy ways to restart schools

UH officials hope that parents and schools will use the guide to safely reopen schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CLEVELAND — University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's has released their own guidelines for the safe and healthy reopening of schools in the United States.

The "UH Rainbow Healthy Restart Playbook for Reopening Schools" includes commentary from health officials and experts to help slow the possible spread of the Coronavirus inside classrooms.

"Schools have a special role in our communities and their stewardship is important in this challenging time," a press release from UH said. "In response, UH Rainbow created a comprehensive toolkit that combines the clinical perspective of current guidelines based on what is currently known about COVID-19 and how it is transmitted, together with the important psychosocial aspects of communicating health information to children and their families, as well as information about wellness and resilience."

The detailed guide includes advice on talking to children about COVID-19, the basics of the Coronavirus, and mask-etiquette in public.

The Playbook also provides "real-life examples" and recommendations for parents, students, and school administrators coping with heading back into the classroom.

“COVID-19 spreads when people are together, as they are in schools,” said Dr. Joan Zoltanski, leader of the UH Healthy Restart guide. “By applying the basic precautions listed in the Playbook, schools can help reduce the risk to teachers, students, staff and their families if they choose to re-open in-person education."
