BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — The Bay Village Historical Society is putting up for auction what some people may see as a pretty morbid piece of local history.
It's the original fireplace mantle from the Sam Sheppard home. The fireplace was in the house when Sheppard's wife Marilyn was murdered on July 4, 1954.
The fireplace is the only large piece of the original Sheppard home that is still around since the house was torn down.
Bay Village history experts says there's still a huge fascination with the Sam Sheppard case.
"We get people from all over the country who come to see it," says Eric Eakin from the Bay Village Historical Society. "This murder has still has gathered the interest from people, people from all over the country."
Sheppard was tried twice for his wife's murder. He was found guilty the first time, then re-tried and acquitted.
The money raised from the auction will be used to keep the Bay Village Historical Museum running.
Bidding is up to $500, but organizers think its worth about a million dollars. You can bid on the fireplace through noon on Monday, March 2.
