ELKTON, Ohio — Hundreds of Elkton inmates convicted of sex crimes against children are on the verge of being transferred or released after last week’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.
As 3News previously reported, Judge James Gwin ordered the Bureau of Prisons to identify the most vulnerable inmates at Elkton Federal Prison -- those who are 65 and older and those in poor health -- who could potentially be released or transferred because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
837 medically vulnerable inmates were identified. Now, the low-security prison faces a potential large-scale transfer of inmates to less dangerous types of custody including home confinement, community supervision, parole, compassionate release or furlough.
So, who are these 837 medically vulnerable inmates? 3News Investigates took a look at their rap sheets.
337 of them or 40-percent are doing time for possession or distribution of obscene matter, or crimes related to child pornography.
That includes 42-year-old Craig Schaber of Marion. He was sentenced to 21 years in 2019 for attempted sex trafficking of minors, after police say he tried to offer cash in exchange for sex with two young girls.
That also includes this Pennsylvania man, a convicted sex offender, 40-year-old Timothy Kelly. He was sentenced 12 years at for child pornography and indecent behavior with a minor.
While child pornography charges make up the lion’s share, 282 medically vulnerable inmates or 34-percent are in Elkton on drug-related charges. 85 medically vulnerable inmates or 10-percent are in Elkton on firearm or gun-related charges.
The rest of the crimes include sexual abuse, fraud, robbery, burglary and racketeering.
Elkton is one of several prisons across the U.S. that has been gravely impacted by the pandemic. So far, nine inmates at Elkton have died from COVID-19.
As 3News has also reported, former Cuyahoga County commissioner, Jimmy Dimora is also serving at Elkton Federal Prison. The 64 year old was convicted in 2012 on 31 corruption charges. He's also on the list of medically vulnerable inmates.
