If you're planning to travel this Memorial Day weekend, be prepared to pay a premium at the pump.
Gas prices and airfare tickets have surged throughout the U.S. in recent months causing many to change their travel habits.
AAA has released information on how these prices will affect Northeast Ohioans and what you might face if you have plans to travel this weekend.
Motorists in Northeast Ohio will pay over $1.31 more per gallon on average this week than in 2021.
The average price of gas throughout Northeast Ohio for this week is $4.458, compared to last week's average price of $4.269. During the week of May 24, 2021, last year's Memorial Day week, gas prices averaged $2.941.
Below are the average gas prices of unleaded gas in various areas:
- $4.465 - Cleveland
- $4.468 - Parma
- $4.471 - Youngstown
- $4.442 - Elyria
According to AAA, the national average of a gallon of gas has either remained flat or risen since April 24. A new record for a national gas price been set daily since May 10.
Gas prices have risen an average of $1.05 more than it was on February 24 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused uncertainty throughout the oil market.
The national average currently sits at $4.59 and all 50 states are above $4.00 per gallon.
