Phoebe McIntosh is back at work.
"Senior citizens seem to think they are not employable, nothing could be further from the truth," she says. "I need to be out and about among people. Because people make me happy."
The AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) found Phoebe her job. That's what they do for those over 55.
"You can think of it as an economic stimulus for Cuyahoga County," explains Michelle Simko, Project Director, AARP Foundation SCSEP
The program places workers in temporary jobs, but helps them search for something more permanent. All of this at no cost to the employer.
"So while you are at your host agency, you are paired with employment specialist here in the office, who are looking for jobs on your behalf," says Simko.
Most mature workers in the program find their next job in 3 to 6 months. Derrick Warren, was ready to work, after overcoming a personal struggle. "I wanted to do something other than sitting at home. So AARP taught me how to job search on line," he recalls.
He landed three job offers as a cook.
"I love working with people, I'm a people person," Derrick adds.
As for McIntosh, she's still searching for her next opportunity.
"I have not found my 100% niche as yet, but I'm sure that permanent place will be available when the time is right," she says confidently.
