AEP Ohio residential customers to see price hike in April

Despite the price hike, those who use AEP Ohio's SSO plan should see an overall 10% decrease in June

COLUMBUS, Ohio — AEP Ohio residential customers will see their bills go up next month.

The energy company says a typical resident who uses 1,000 kWh of electricity a month will see the transmission service line item on their electric bill increase by about $10 beginning April 1.

AEP Ohio says the money will go toward helping prevent outages, protect against threats to the electric grid and support new jobs.

Industrial customer rates won't increase because residential customers tend to use more energy during peak times of the year.

"During the peak period where these rates are determined, residential users were using a larger share of energy during that time," said Scott Blake, spokesperson for AEP Ohio.

However, there is some good news for people who don't shop around for their energy supplier. AEP Ohio says those who receive their power supply through the company's Standard Service Offer will see a decrease of about 30% per month starting on June 1.

Starting in June, once all the updates take effect, customers who are on the company's SSO plan should see about a 10% decrease from their March 2024 bill.
