According to the Akron Police Department, the incident happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. near the 900 block of East Waterloo Road. Officers responded to the scene of a crash between a Chevy Malibu and a Ford Escape.

The driver of the Malibu was traveling west on East Waterloo Road when it attempted to pass a semi-truck in the righthand lane near a portion of the road where the two-lane roadway merges into one lane. The driver of the Malibu lost control of his vehicle when attempting to merge into the single lane, crossed in front of the semi-truck, then across the middle double yellow line and struck the Ford Escape that was traveling eastbound.

The driver of the Malibu died as a result of his injuries. The 49-year-old woman who was driving the Ford Escape sustained minor fractures and was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The names of both drives are currently being withheld by Akron police at this time.

Speed is considered to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
