AKRON, Ohio — Police say they have arrested three people in connection with an illegal gambling operation in Akron's Kenmore neighborhood.
In a press release, authorities indicated the activities seemed to resemble a sort of underground casino. Officials obtained a search warrant for the property on the 1400 block of Kenmore Boulevard following "numerous probable cause traffic-related stops for suspicious and other illegal activity at the location."
Officers raided the building around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. Once there, they claim they seized more than $14,000 in cash, 22 gambling machines, methamphetamines, and a handgun, along with other items.
The names of the suspects have not been released, but they have been identified as 63 and 52-year-old men along with a 30-year-old woman. All face charges of operating a gambling house and prohibition against gambling.
The Akron Police Department released the following statement:
"Akron Police will continue to work tirelessly to enhance our public safety efforts. This includes collaborating with our local and federal law enforcement partners and other officials to curb gun violence and, in this case, crack down on illegal gambling operations wherever they sprout up. We recognize that illegal gambling creates public safety and nuisance-related concerns for our community and will continue to tackle these issues together."
