3 shot, 1 killed at memorial vigil in Akron's North Hill neighborhood

Officials say 'dozens' of rounds were fired and they are currently examining shell casings as evidence.

AKRON, Ohio — One person is dead and two others have been injured following a shooting in Akron's North Hill neighborhood Wednesday evening.

According to police, there had been a "large" memorial gathering near the 800 block of Wall Street when a group of possibly multiple people began firing gunshots at the vigil around 6 p.m. Investigators believe someone in the crowd may have exchanged fire with the perpetrators.

A 30-year-old man sustained multiple bullet wounds and was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center via a private vehicle. He died there as a result of his injuries. The Summit County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as Christopher Johnson of Akron. Johnson died of a gunshot wound to the torso. 

A second-30-year-old man was also shot at the scene and rushed by ambulance to Summa Health Akron City Hospital, while a 19-year-old victim took himself to the same facility with his own injuries. Both are expected to fully recover.

No arrests have been made at this time. Officials say "dozens" of rounds were fired and they are currently examining shell casings as evidence.
