Akron police: 4-year-old boy taken to hospital after 'accidentally' shooting himself with unsecured gun

Akron police say no arrests have been made.

AKRON, Ohio — Akron police are investigating after a 4-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself with an unsecured handgun.

Police officials say they responded to a home in the 1000 block of Edmeyer Court at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday for a shooting. Upon arriving at the home, police found a 4-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. 

The boy was taken to Akron Children's Hospital, where he is in serious condition. 

Police say that based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, the boy allegedly accessed an unsecured handgun and accidentally shot himself. "Detectives are still sorting out exactly what happened and how the boy got a hold of the gun," said Akron police in a media release. 

At this time, the shooting remains under investigation and no arrests have been made.
