Man injured in Akron road rage shooting after 'minor accident' involving 2 vehicles

Police say the victim sideswiped the suspect's car before the suspect allegedly fired "multiple shots" and fled the scene.

A 78-year-old man is expected to recover after being shot in what police are calling a "road rage incident" following an accident in Akron Thursday afternoon.

According to the Akron Police Department, officers responded to the shooting near the area of East Market Street and South Arlington Street just before 4:15 p.m. They found the 78-year-old victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim, whom police have not identified, was taken to a city hospital for "what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury," police said.

Jon Jenkins, 39, was arrested by police minutes after the incident and is considered a suspect.

Police say the victim was involved in a "minor accident" with another car on East Market Street before the alleged shooting. According to police, the victim sideswiped Jenkins' car and caused minor damage to the vehicle. That's when the 39-year-old man allegedly fired "multiple shots," hitting the victim once before fleeing the scene.

"At least one handgun and other evidence" was collected from the scene, police say.

The suspect was taken into custody after being tracked down at a home in the 700 block of Ravenswood Avenue. Jenkins was transported to the Akron police station for questioning and later charged with felonious assault.

Jenkins was booked at the Summit County Jail.
