Akron announces new 'Mow to Own' program for unused city lots

There are approximately 250 properties available.

AKRON, Ohio — Have you always wanted to own land? In Akron, a new program is making it as easy as mowing the law.

On Monday, The City of Akron introduced the "Akron Neighborhood:Mow to Own," program. The program allows for currently property owners to acquire vacant lots near their home.

The cost of the property is free in exchange for neighbors mowing and maintaining the property for six months. The “Mow to Own” program was created to combat vacancy, abandonment and to help keep Akron properties maintained.

“The vacant lots available are underutilized and often a source of complaints from surrounding neighbors," said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. "Offering this 'sweat equity' program helps return these parcels back to the tax rolls while giving residents a unique opportunity to expand their land ownership at very little cost,” explained Horrigan.

To participate in the program, residents need to apply by June 15. Once accepted they will be responsible for the property’s up keep from June through November. Applicants will be responsible for things such as, mowing, cutting, weeding, snow shoveling, litter removal and raking leaves, according to the City officials.
