AKRON, Ohio β Leap Day only comes once every four years, and couples in Akron took a leap of their own into marriage on Thursday.
The city of Akron hosted weddings for seven happy couples at the Akron Art Museum on Thursday. Akron Municipal Court Judge Ron Cable officiated the weddings.
3News spoke with one of the couples, Ron Gould and Shayla Freeman, who contacted the city of Akron over a year ago, asking if they would be doing weddings on Leap Day.
"I remember back in 2020, just as the pandemic was getting started, I remember reading that Akron was hosting appointment weddings... But then when we got engaged last year, I was thinking like, 'You know, maybe they're going to do it again.' So I did some research and started emailing somebody from the city and I wanted to make sure that we were definitely on the books," said Gould.
The couple also said that they like the uniqueness of when they can celebrate their future anniversaries.
"Well, when I tell people, some husbands usually say, 'You only have to celebrate every four years.' But then I go the other direction and say, 'No, we're going to do it on the 28th and the first every other year," said Gould.
In addition, Ignite Brewing Company in Barberton is offering free weddings on Leap Day as well.
